ARTIST STATEMENT

My work grows out of time spent immersed in the forests, rocky paths, waterways, and meadows of my native New Hampshire. Some works are painted from within the landscape, close to stone and water; others open outward toward hills, sky, and distance. Working in acrylic, I simplify natural forms into layered color and rhythmic shapes, balancing weight and flow. These paintings come from slowing down, paying attention, and returning to familiar places shaped by weather, water, light, and time.

This is our New Hampshire.

Stay tuned for more spotlights from each of our Selections artists.

The Persistence of Place – A Barn Project

Barns and sheds have long captured my imagination. To me, they embody a quiet strength—structures that endure, adapt, and age with a grace uniquely their own. Each one seems to carry a story of personality and survival.
Over the past decade, I have photographed barns throughout New England, guided by cherished memories of growing up along the rural border of New Hampshire and Vermont. I remember the winding back roads—mostly dirt—where barns stood as familiar residents of the landscape. Some remain lovingly maintained, while others have been allowed to settle into an elegant, weathered decay. In my work, isolating these structures against a white background brings their stories forward, highlighting the details that speak to their resilience as they withstand years of heat, rain, wind, and snow.

I have gathered a working portfolio of dignified barns throughout northern New England and beyond—structures that reflect a steadfast calm rooted in their rural settings. For those that have been abandoned, I hope to preserve the memory of a time gone by, inviting viewers to contemplate what once was and what remains.
