ARTIST STATEMENT

Pastorale

Pastorale is a celebration of and a reverence for the variety of family-owned farms in New Hampshire. Works in this exhibition showcase farms where artist Cheryl Shanahan buys produce, proteins, and peonies. It is important to the artist to support local businesses, and farms are an integral part of the local economy.

Pastorale is also a commentary of life lived in what ancient Greeks referred to as “Kairos” time – “the right or critical time” – flow state. Modern society is in a wrestling match with chronological time: our calendars, planners, watches, meetings generally dictate how the days are run – and the reality is that it’s really a contemporary construct or experiment.

Pastorale celebrates those who work in rhythm with Nature’s pace and flow and honors the spaces where the built environment meets the natural one.

ARTIST STATEMENT

No Longer and Not Yet

My work explores the idea of portals: thresholds between states of being, moments where choice, loss, and transformation coexist. Through ethereal abstract botanical forms, I investigate life, death, and the spaces in between: the choices, pauses, crossings, and unseen shifts that shape our internal experiences.

Working in mixed media allows me to build layered surfaces that feel both fragile and enduring. Botanical imagery appears not as literal representation, but as symbolic language—roots, blooms, and dissolving forms echoing cycles of emergence, decay, and renewal. These elements act as markers of transition, inviting viewers to consider what it means to move forward, to let go, or to stand briefly at the edge of change.
No Longer and Not Yet, as a body of work inhabits liminal thresholds, spaces between endings and beginnings, certainty and possibility: where transformation is ongoing and unresolved. Each painting functions as a visual portal, offering a space for reflection rather than resolution. The work does not offer answers, but instead holds space for contemplation, honoring the complexity of becoming and the inevitability of transformation
